A high proportion of students in the borough have passed their GCSEs and other equivalent qualifications, demonstrating the hard work undertaken by staff and students.

Newport Girls’ High School’s Year 11s are celebrating a record-breaking set of GCSE results. 90% of GCSEs were graded 7-9 (or A*-A) - a figure which has not been seen before in the school’s history, even during the centre- and teacher-assessed grading scenarios of 2020 and 2021.

Headteacher, Michael Scott commented: “The NGHS Year 11 cohort of 2022 have always been a trend-setting year group and I am delighted to share their successes with the world today. We knew this cohort were on track for great success and they have gone even further than this in their final examinations.”

The Telford Priory school celebrated its best ever English results and saw many of their students ecstatic with their results. 

Headteacher, Stacey Jordan said:  'We are all so proud of the year group for maintaining their focus and commitment after such a difficult period during Covid. They have always been such a lovely and hardworking year group and we are delighted that they are now able to take the next step in their educational and work careers.' 

Haberdashers’ Adams is celebrating its best ever set of GCSE exam results this year with over half of the results falling into the highest bracket - grades 9 and 8.

Headmaster Gary Hickey explains: “A total of 120 pupils at Haberdashers’ Adams sat their GCSEs this year and have achieved an outstanding set of results. I am delighted to report that 54% of the results were of the highest grading of 8s and 9s, which under the old system is equivalent to getting an A*; 73% were in the 7-9 bracket (A -A*); and 89% were graded 9-6 (A*-B), taking the overall pass rate to 99%. The vast majority of pupils studied ten GCSEs with an impressive 28 pupils achieving grades 7 to 9 in all ten of their subjects. Eleven pupils achieved all 8s and 9s and two of those pupils secured a complete set of ten grade 9s – a terrific accomplishment.”

The Learning Community Trust says it is ‘absolutely delighted’ with GCSE results at all three of its Telford secondary schools, which have broken several records. 

The Trust runs three of the largest secondary schools in the borough - Hadley Learning Community, Ercall Wood, and Charlton.

•Ercall Wood achieved its best-ever results as part of across-the-board improvements in attainment rates under the school’s new leadership team.

•Hadley Learning Community maintained the levels of its record-breaking results in the year before the Covid lockdown, headlined by another particularly strong performance in English.

Daniel Roycroft, Secondary Headteacher at Hadley Learning Community said: “We are delighted with the results our students have achieved this year. 

“Despite all the challenges they have faced due to Covid, they have shown exemplary strength of character working with resilience and determination to succeed in all areas of their school life.  

“The results this year have continued to build on the excellent standards from the last set of official examinations in 2019, with particularly strong achievements in English and Science.”

•Charlton School continued its improvements of 2019 by recording its highest ever percentage of pupils achieving 9-4 grades, and more students achieving high English grades than ever before.

Dr Gill Eatough, chief executive of the Learning Community Trust, said: “We’re absolutely delighted with these results, which reflect the hard work of our students during what has clearly been a challenging couple of years.

Telford College is celebrating another ‘excellent’ set of GCSE results. The overall GCSE pass rate of more than 98% was comfortably ahead of the national average, and well over a third of students achieved high grades.

“These are absolutely fantastic results, reflecting the hard work our students and staff have put in during a challenging couple of years. “, said principal and chief executive Graham Guest.

He added: “Maths and English form a key part of the Government’s levelling up programme, and opens up pathways to the maximum number of courses and job opportunities.

“It’s one of the reasons we are so excited to be working with Telford & Wrekin Council and local businesses on creating a new digital skills and enterprise hub in the town’s Station Quarter, with maths at the very heart of a modern, technology-driven curriculum.”

Burton Borough School said they are very pleased to announce that the Class of 2022 achieved some great results this year.  Over 73% of our students passed the basics (both English and Maths) at grade 4 and above.  

Krissi Carter, Principal at Burton Borough School, said: “The Class of 2022 has worked very hard throughout their five years with us and particularly so during the Coronavirus pandemic.  They have shown unbelievable resilience and dedication despite the disruption and the results that they receive today are incredibly well-deserved.  We are very proud of them and know that they will have a fantastic future ahead of them.” 

Michelle Salter, Telford and Wrekin Virtual School Headteacher said: “Well done to all our Year 11s Children in Care for a very good set of GCSE results, a reflection of their hard work and effort.  They are now getting ready to start the next chapter of their education, going onto college, Sixth form or to one of our local training providers to further continue their studies. “

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “I would like to congratulate and thank the borough’s pupils, their families, our school staff and governors for another very good set of results.

“I also wish everyone who took their GCSEs this year every success with the future, whether they go on to do A-Levels, do a vocational qualification or leave school to start their working lives.”
