Another successful year of GCSE results
Students in Telford and Wrekin are celebrating their success after receiving their GCSE results today.
Early indications show that a number of borough schools have seen an improvement on last year’s results.
For the second year in a row, GCSE grades have been teacher-assessed, after exams were cancelled due to the disruption caused by the pandemic.
This year’s grades have been determined from a wide “range of evidence” including mock exams, coursework, essays and in-class tests.
Stacey Jordan Headteacher at The Telford Priory School said: “We are absolutely delighted with the results of our students after their hard work and perseverance during such a difficult year. Our staff and students stood tall amidst it all and these results are thoroughly deserved.”
Lee Hadley Principle Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby commented: ‘We are very pleased that the hard work of staff and pupils has paid off and that the vast majority of Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby pupils have the grades they need to progress to the next stage of their education. Our young people deserve huge praise for the resilience they have shown in a year that has seen them face setback after setback. They should be proud of the grades they have secured.’
Newport Girls High School were also delighted by the achievements of all their Year 11s. Headteacher Michael Scott said: “Newport Girls High School is once again celebrating a phenomenal set of GCSE results and retains its place as one of the UK’s leading girls’ schools. This year, 86% of GCSEs were graded 7-9 (A*-A) and every student achieved Grade 5 or better in English and Mathematics.”
Learning Community Trust, that runs Hadley Learning Community, Ercall Wood and Charlton secondary academies said it was once again ‘delighted’ with the GCSE performance of students at all three of its secondary schools. Learning Community Trust chief executive, Dr Gill Eatough, said: “Our students have worked really hard and performed fantastically well under the most disruptive circumstances. “All three of our secondary schools in Telford have seen improved results, particularly in English and maths which is a strong focus for us.”
Gary Hickey, Headmaster of Haberdashers’ Adams in Newport , said: “I am delighted to report another excellent set of results and my congratulations to all of our pupils on these and everything they have achieved over the past two school years.
"A total of 119 pupils completed their GCSEs studies with almost everyone studying ten subjects each, resulting in a pass rate of 95% (grades 9 - 5).
"Consistent with previous years, 70% of pupils achieved grades 9-7 (formerly A*-A) and 48% achieved the highest grades of 9 - 8 (A*).
"Once again there have been some incredible individual achievements with a total of 38 pupils securing grades 9 -7 (formerly A*/A) in all ten of their subjects and fifteen pupils achieving a straight set of ten GCSEs graded 9/8 (formerly A*).
"Similar to previous years, there have been some particularly high results in the sciences, computing, mathematics and geography. Music also excelled with 91% of grades at 9-7 (A*/A).”
Telford College is celebrating another ‘excellent’ set of GCSE results, with pass rates and high grades once again running comfortably ahead of the national average.
The overall pass rate of more than 99% for maths and English qualifications is 7.3% above this year’s UK average.
There was a 100% pass rate for the college’s adult learners.
Principal and chief executive at Telford College, Graham Guest said: “We are particularly pleased with these excellent results, which reflect the hard work of our students and the efforts of our staff during what has been another challenging and unorthodox year. “We look forward to seeing many of them now progress with us onto A level or vocational courses over the coming years.”
Michelle Salter, Telford and Wrekin Virtual School Headteacher said: “After an exceptionally challenging year in education, our Children in Care have worked to the absolute best of their ability and their results are a reflection of the hard work and effort they put into their assessments this year. Our Year 11s are getting ready to start the next chapter of their education, going onto college, Sixth form or one of our local training providers to further their studies. Well done to all our young people! “
Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, said: “Congratulations to all the students receiving their GCSE grades today. You have worked incredibly hard in the most difficult of time.
" I must also say a huge thank you to all the teaching and school staff across the borough, to governors and to parents and carers who have been supporting our young people in this another challenging year caused by the pandemic.
" Despite these difficulties, our borough schools have maintained a high standard, with many local schools seeing an improvement on last year’s results – which is all credit to all the hard-work and dedication that everyone has put in.
"Best of luck to all our young people as they head into their next step of education, employment and training."
