Keeping Telford and Wrekin moving!

Balfour Beatty Living Places has been supporting Telford & Wrekin Council to significantly improve the borough’s roads and highways, since being named the Council’s main contractor for highways and engineering works in April last year.

Over 160 improvement schemes have been completed in the borough since April last year, as a result of the partnership working between Balfour Beatty and Telford & Wrekin Council.

These include road and footpath improvements – with almost 100 miles of roads and footpaths being resurfaced by the Council together with Balfour Beatty since April 2019.

Additionally, over 8,400 potholes have been repaired by crews during this time, with the work set to continue in force even during lockdown, particularly as roads are less busy than normal.

Projects have also included road safety schemes (with a total of 70 miles of road markings carried out in the borough) as well as safety schemes at a number of schools, addressing concerns around traffic speeds, pedestrian safety and inappropriate parking.

All of the works undertaken are in response to issues raised by residents, elected councillors and local town and parish councils or as part of the Council’s planned rolling maintenance work.

Additionally, Balfour Beatty has  cleared over 30,000 drains in the borough – removing all the debris and silt.

Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Neighbourhood, Commercial Services and Regeneration, said: “We are determined that our road, footpath and cycleway network will be among the best around.

“Our administration has invested many tens of millions of pounds over and above money received from government in order to try and achieve this.

“As a result of the work carried out in a number of locations and the high quality of workmanship, the roads are now visibly better, safer and with an extended life.

“We know there’s still more to do and we will be working hard with our partners at Balfour Beatty to make further improvements.

“Many thanks to all the crews who are carrying on with the work during these challenging times caused by the coronavirus pandemic, helping us to keep Telford and Wrekin moving.

“Over the next 3 year, as part of our “Pride in Our Community” programme we will be investing a further £55m in maintaining and repairing the boroughs roads, footpaths, bridges, street lighting, road safety and drainage schemes.

Paul Raynor, Balfour Beatty Living Places Contract Manager, said: “Since being appointed as Telford & Wrekin Council’s sole highways contractor in 2019, our team have continuously delivered high quality highways maintenance works safely and efficiently for the Council and wider community.

“All works are being delivered in line with current guidance on COVID-19 from the UK Government in accordance with the Site Operating Procedures, and endorsed by Public Health England.

“We look forward to continuing our close working relationship with the Council, to support its ambitious plans, while delivering cost-effective solutions and improving overall satisfaction for the travelling public.”
