Save money and keep your home warm and cosy!

As the winter draws nearer, with forecasts predicting a harsh winter, Telford & Wrekin Council is encouraging anyone to find out more on how to save money on their energy bills and make their homes warmer and more energy efficient.

Save money and keep your home warm and cosy!

The Council has two main free-to-use services to help people in the borough save significantly:

1/ LEAP (Local Energy Advice Partnership) is a completely free of charge service that helps eligible borough households reduce their energy costs  and keep their homes warm and cosy.

Residents may be eligible for the scheme if they have one of the following: a low income, a long term illness or disability or if they receive Housing Benefits, tax credits or an income or disability related benefit.

If eligible, a LEAP Home Advisor will carry out a free home visit to assess what help is needed.

They can implement measures free-of-charge such as fitting energy-saving LED bulbs, draught-proofing of doors, installing cylinder jackets, fitting heat reflectors to radiators and many others.

Since the LEAP service has been launched in 2017, over 90 households in the borough have benefitted from it.

In addition to getting a warmer, cosier home during the winter, households who have had a LEAP visit have enjoyed significantly lower energy bills as a result of the energy efficiency measures and switching to a cheaper energy tariff.

You can find out more on LEAP here or call free on 0800 060 7567.

Further support for free and impartial energy advice and home visit checks could be provided through Telford Energy Advice, by calling 0800 677 1952 or emailing advice@mea.org.uk

2/ Switch Telford is the Council’s free-to-use energy price comparison and switching website that can help all residents save money on their energy bills (there is no eligibility criteria).

Anyone can access Switch Telford simply by logging on www.switch.telford.gov.uk or calling 0800 188 4969, providing their post code and having an energy bill on hand.

It then takes you as little as five minutes to get tailored advice on the cheapest tariff for your household and switch supplier.

It’s really that simple.

There’s also no need to contact your old or new supplier, as the switching provider will handle the switching process for you.

Since its launch in 2017, there have been more than 1600 switches in the borough, with average annual savings of over £200.

For every switch made through switch.telford.gov.uk, the Council receives a commission from the new energy supplier.

This helps to generate money that goes back into supporting and sustaining council services in the borough, such as those for vulnerable old people and children.

Councillor Raj Mehta, Cabinet Member for Community & Inclusivity said: "With winter approaching, we want to encourage people to access our free-to-use services and start saving, while increasing the comfort of their home for free (if eligible for LEAP) and paying less on gas and electricity by switching their supplier through a simple, hassle free process.

“Hundreds of households have already benefitted from these schemes but many more can join, so help us spread the word.
Even more, if you know someone who you think is eligible for LEAP, get them to apply online here  or by calling 0800 060 7567 for free, as it can really make a difference.

“We’re always looking at new initiatives to help residents and we hope we’ll be able to announce some more new schemes quite soon, so that people can save and make their homes more comfortable.”
