The allowances and reimbursements paid to Telford & Wrekin’s councillors have been published for the latest financial year.

Councillors’ allowances published

The total paid to the borough’s 54 councillors and 13 co-optees in the year 2017/18 was £619,765 .  Allowances have been frozen since 2011.


Councillors all receive a basic allowance of £7,870 a year for their work. Councillors who perform additional duties such as a cabinet or a scrutiny role are entitled to receive an additional special responsibility allowance.


The amount paid to councillors is £14,073 below what councillors were entitled to as the council’s Cabinet took a voluntary ten per cent reduction in their special responsibilities allowance.


The total voluntary reduction by Cabinet members since 2011 is now over £135,000.  . 


This money is now being used to fund the council’s Young People’s Grants Scheme to promote educational, cultural and sporting excellence in the borough.


Councillors and co-optees can also claim reimbursements for expenses incurred in their council work. In 2017/18 this was £622. In 2009/10 the figure for reimbursements was £12,008.


Telford & Wrekin councilor allowances are set independently and were last raised in 2010.Full details of what each councillor is paid and reimbursements claimed are published in the local press at www.telford.gov.uk/opencouncil
