Cracking Easter fun for every child in Telford and Wrekin

Easter is just around the corner and for young people there’s plenty of free, fun and accessible activities to enjoy wherever they live in the borough.

With the cost of living still squeezing household budgets, Telford & Wrekin Council will be running its free Urban Games sports programme for girls and boys, aged eight to 16. Football, cricket, wrestling, hockey, multi-sports and BMX biking are all running at various venues and children can just turn up.

The council’s popular Kids4£1 scheme also returns with leisure activities including golf, tobogganing, tennis and more. There’s the 10 by 10 campaign, too, encouraging children to try a range of activities before their tenth birthday.

The council also provides a broad range of inclusive activities and events that children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities can take part in, to make friends and develop new skills and interests.

To make it easier to search for what’s on, the council has launched its Youth Offer website, a great one-stop-shop for younger residents to discover things to do.

Councillor Kelly Middleton (Lab), Cabinet Member for Healthy, Safer & Stronger Communities and Partnerships said:

“We’ve got an egg-citing line-up of affordable things to do over the Easter break to help families still struggling with the cost of living.

“All our activities are about giving children opportunities to socialise, learn new skills and spend time in a positive way and we are committed to offering activities that all children in the borough can enjoy.

“We recognise that some children have additional needs and are working with parents, schools and community partners to develop new, accessible activities and offers and look at new ways of delivering existing ones.”

The BMX sessions are gearing up to be a favourite at the Urban Games and now more children will be able to take part after money was provided by the West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner for the purchase of bikes which will be used by Telford Flyers.

West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner John Campion said:

“I am committed to ensuring young people in the community are given safe spaces to explore more positive directions in life.

“By providing funding for the BMX bikes for the Urban Games, more young people are able to explore their talents, contributing to greater community safety and cohesion.”

Urban Games is just one of the projects funded through the council’s Safer & Stronger Communities programme in partnership with the Police and Crime Commissioner and part-funded by levelling up money from the government.

Safer & Stronger Communities supports projects that bring people together and reduce crime and anti-social behaviour and are the result of residents’ feedback. If people have ideas for a project in their area, they can contact the team at saferstronger@telford.gov.uk
