Officers from Telford & Wrekin Council’s licensing, neighbourhood enforcement and public protection teams supported the targeted operation led by West Mercia Police.

Private and commercial vehicles were stopped including a number of taxis, some of which were licensed by neighbouring authorities. One of the taxis licensed by Telford & Wrekin Council was damaged which will result in a review and potential action for breach of a licence condition.

As well as taxis, several other drivers have been ordered not to get behind the wheel of their vehicle until they have put right defects such as illegal tyres. One person was banned from driving without insurance and had their vehicle seized.

Councillor Richard Overton (Lab), Deputy Leader for Telford & Wrekin Council and Cabinet Member for Homes and Enforcement said:

“We are pleased to have supported the police, along with partner agencies, in carrying out this latest roadside enforcement operation.

“We conduct regular vehicle stops to help keep all road users safe and to deter those who abuse the law and create a danger for others.

“The safety of our residents is our top priority and we are committed to doing all we can to ensure vehicles are roadworthy and motorists are safe to be at the wheel.”

Pc Sharon Major, from West Mercia Police, said:

“This was a positive and successful operation working alongside our colleagues and partners. Operations such as these are important to ensure safer roads and public safety.”

Telford & Wrekin Council’s state-of-the-art mobile CCTV hub was key in helping detect potential offences. The operation was also supported by Wolverhampton City Council, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency and HM Revenue & Customs officers who were checking the correct fuel was being used in vehicles.
