Celebrating Carers Rights Day with a host of support for carers

To mark Carers Rights Day, Telford & Wrekin Council, together with Telford and Wrekin All Age Carers Centre and a range of local organisations are hosting a celebration event for carers, veterans and their families.

The event will run between 11.00am – 2.30pm on Tuesday, 21 November in Telford's Central Square, at Telford and Wrekin Council for Voluntary Service (CVS), Hazeldine House offices TF3 4JL.

Visitors are welcome to drop by for information and advice on health care, advanced care planning, independent living, volunteer opportunities, dementia support and much more.

They can visit the stands of local providers (such as Age UK, Citizens Advice, Healthy Lifestyle Advisors, Alzheimer's Society, The Marches Energy) for a friendly chat about how they can boost their wellbeing and how they can benefit from various free-of-charge support services.

Councillor Paul Watling (Lab), cabinet member for Adult Social Care and Health, Integration and Transformation said: “There are around 18,000 unpaid carers in our borough who play a vital role in supporting families and friends to live independently within their own homes and communities.

“We know that caring can be challenging and exhausting at times and we want to help all borough carers as much as we can.

“This Carers Rights Day event is one of the many ways our council, together with Telford All Age Carers Centre are helping to make lives better for carers living in the borough.

“Earlier this year we’ve launched the third edition of the Carers Wellbeing Guide which tells people in one place about the range of local support they are entitled as a carer and signposts to local organisations that can be of assistance.

“So please, drop by the event on 21 November to talk to us and to local providers about how we can help you. Don’t forget to download a copy of the Carers Wellbeing Guide and keep it handy.

“Please spread the word about this event and the Wellbeing guide so that many residents can benefit from it.”

Debbie Gibbon, CEO at Telford and Wrekin CVS said: “We are really excited to work together with Telford & Wrekin Council and a range of partners to continue our series of free events for carers.

“This year we are celebrating Carers Rights Day with a 1940’s style entertainment, extending a warm welcome also to veterans and their families.

“Please join us on the day to find about the ways in which Telford and Wrekin All Age Carers Centre and many local providers can make life better for you and the ones you care for.

“The day promises to be an exciting one, as we are also hosting a live war-time themed performance from “Casey’s on tour”. Come and enjoy this, along with cake and refreshments.

“We are looking forward to welcoming you to the event. Should you not be able to come on the day but you are interested to find out more about carers’ support, please get in touch with Telford and Wrekin All Age Carers Centre.”

Carers Rights Day is an annual campaign lead by Carers UK that aims to raise awareness of carers’ rights and the support available for them.

A whole host of support is available to local carers from Telford and Wrekin CVS, All Age Carers Centre. This includes information and guidance, befriending services, counselling, financial assistance, activities for respite and more.

Telford & Wrekin Council, together with Telford All Age Carers Centre and a range of local providers has also made the Carers Wellbeing Guide available. It is a comprehensive guide containing useful information, advice and contacts for carers to use in their day-to-day life.
