Stars from TV’s RuPaul’s Drag Race UK included in LGBTQ+ history month activities in Telford.
February in the UK is a month long annual celebration for LGBTQ+ History Month with lots of activities to mark this special occasion and Telford is celebrating too.
LGBTQ+ History month shines a light on lesbian, gay, bisexual trans, and non-binary history, including the history of LGBT+ rights and related civil rights movements. LGBTQ+ History Month 2023: Behind the Lens celebrates LGBT+ peoples’ contribution to cinema and film from behind the lens. Directors, cinematographers, screen writers, producers, animators, costume designers, special effects, makeup artists, lighting directors, musicians, choreographers and beyond.
Telford Theatre is kicking off LGBTQ+ history month with RuPaul Drag Race stars from Season 3 Vanity Milan and Elektra Fence in their show “History's A Drag” on Wednesday 1 February. A show that promises to be sexy, savage, sugar and spice and everything nice. Both are incredible performers and know how to work their audience for a fun night of music and a performance full of personality. Councillor Kelly Middleton (Labour), Cabinet Member for Leisure, Public Health and Wellbeing, Equalities and Partnerships, said: “One of the ways we demonstrate our commitment to equality and inclusion is by supporting LGBTQ+ History Month. We will be starting the month long celebration proudly displaying the rainbow flag on all Council buildings, and hosting a fabulous show at Telford Theatre. There will also be a series of events to support and inform Council Colleagues about this important month, highlighting the journey for equality for all.”
On 3 March there will be a special evening at The Orbit Cinema, Wellington, with a screening of “Blue Jean”, a quiet and soulful drama about a closeted PE teacher reckons with her identity during the introduction of the stigmatising law to Thatcherite Britain. There will also be a talk and Q&A with Peter Tatchell. Contact The Orbit for more details on how to book. Telford & Wrekin Council have a planning a programme of events through February for staff from the council which will be informative and supportive of colleagues who identify as LGBTQ+, raising awareness of the issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community.

The LGBTQ+ Network at Telford & Wrekin Council, encourage colleagues to ask questions and learn more about the history of LGBTQ+ rights and talk openly about their experiences.”
