Still high Covid-19 infection rates in Telford and Wrekin
The number of new coronavirus cases in Telford and Wrekin has continued to decrease in the last week but is still above the national and regional average, the latest figures show.
Telford and Wrekin continues to have the highest Covid-19 infection rate in the West Midlands, as of 7 November,
There were 811 new Coronavirus cases reported for Telford and Wrekin during the past seven days (1-7 November), 136 less than the previous seven-day period.
For the week ending 7 November, the Covid-19 situation in the borough is:
• 811 new Covid-19 cases reported, 136 less compared to the previous week
• The seven-day infection rate for Telford and Wrekin is 447 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• For the West Midlands, the seven-day infection rate is 335 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• For England, the seven-day infection rate is 338 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• Sadly, there have been four further deaths reported within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test (The total number of borough deaths since the start of the pandemic is now 284)
• There were 42 patients with Covid-19 in local hospitals as of 10 November
Helen Onions, Telford and Wrekin's Acting Statutory Director for Public Health, said:
“Although the latest data shows covid cases continuing to drop in Telford and Wrekin, they are still at a very high level.
“Infection rates continue to be highest in younger age groups (under 20s). We continue to work closely with all borough schools to take proactive steps to reduce the spread and minimise disruption to education.
“Everyone in our borough can help to bring the infections down and avoid someone becoming seriously ill.
“Simple actions, such as wearing a face covering in crowded places, testing regularly even if you are feeling well, letting fresh air in when you have visitors at home, can help you and your loved ones reduce the risks of catching Covid-19 this winter.”
Cllr Andy Burford, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, added:
“The best protection against covid this winter is to get your vaccinations, if you are eligible to - book your appointment on the NHS website or walk-in to a vaccination clinic (no appointment needed).
“If you are age 50 or over (or meet other eligibility conditions) and it’s been 152 days (5 months) since your second dose, you can now go ahead and book your booster jab. You will still be offered an appointment from 182 days (6 months) after the day of your second dose.
“Sadly, a high number of positive cases and patients in hospitals as well as more deaths recorded are a strong reminder that the virus continues to impact our borough communities.
“Let’s all do all we can to protect ourselves and others.”
