Local cases expected to rise "very fast" due to Omicron

Telford and Wrekin continues to have the highest infection rate in the West Midlands, the latest figures show.

Local cases expected to rise "very fast" due to Omicron

With local cases in the borough remaining high, local health leaders are warning cases will soon rise very fast due to the Omicron variant.

For the week ending 12 December, the Covid-19 situation in the borough is:
• 968 new Covid-19 cases reported, 142 less compared to the previous week
• The seven-day infection rate for Telford and Wrekin is 534 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• For the West Midlands, the seven-day infection rate is 429 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• For England, the seven-day infection rate is 551 cases of Covid-19 per 100,000
• Sadly, two further deaths have been reported within 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test. The total number of borough deaths since the start of the pandemic is 299.
• There were 28 patients with Covid-19 in local hospitals as of 15 December, compared to 23 the previous week.

Liz Noakes, Telford and Wrekin's Director for Public Health, said:
"The Covid-19 infection rate in Telford and Wrekin remains high and we expect it to climb higher due to Omicron.

"That's why everyone eligible must get their booster jab now, as two doses are not enough to offer you protection against Omicron.

"It is also not too late to get your first or second vaccine doses if you want to have them now.
"I would also encourage people to be cautious this Christmas by reducing non-essential visits and social events and to work from home if you can.
"Do a rapid test to check your Coronavirus status before meeting with people, and encourage your friends and family to do the same.
"Use ventilation and fresh air, and remember hands, face and space.
"It has been a difficult year for everyone. We are all hoping for a better Christmas than the one we had last year - however, we need to get ahead of Omicron by getting fully vaccinated and by being cautious. “

Cllr Andy Burford, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, added:
"We are doing everything we can to support the local NHS to get a booster to every eligible adult by the end of this month.
"We have re-opened the Telford International Centre from today as a walk-in vaccination centre for boosters only (8am-6pm).
“Additional walk-in clinics have also been set up, with extended opening hours - , such as the clinic at Southwater Library, opened every Thursday 5.30pm - 9.30pm and on Saturday, 18 December, 10.30am-3.30pm.
"A mobile vaccination bus will also be touring different parts of the borough in the coming days, to make it as easy as possible for people to get their vaccine.
"Check all the locations, dates and times for local walk-in clinics (no appointment needed) on www.telford.gov.uk/walkin
"You don't want to give Covid this Christmas, getting fully vaccinated, booster included should be top on your Christmas checklist.
"We have made a great start with high vaccination rates in our borough, but we need to keep this going to give as many people as possible the protection they need against the fast-spreading, highly infectious Omicron.”
