National Offer Day for school pupils

Today (16 April) is National Offer Day, when children up and down the country learn which primary school they will attend in September 2020.

Within Telford & Wrekin 1995 applications were received on time which is a rate of 93.2 per cent of children gaining a place at their first preference school.

A further 4.1 per cent gained a place at their second preference school, with another 0.9 per cent gaining a place at their third preference school.

This means that 98.2 per cent of children gained a place at one of their top three preference schools.

98.4 per cent gained a place at one of their preferred schools.

Every applicant who applied on time was offered a school place and only 32 children did not gain a place at one of their preferred schools. This figure has seen a reduction in the number from last year.

Everyone is entitled to make up to four preferences, however not all parents chose to exercise this right as we know that only a third of parents submitted 3 or more school preferences.

Councillor Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Education and Lifelong Learning said: “We have invested heavily in our primary schools in recent years, increasing the number of places available in schools in the areas where we knew they would be needed.

“Today’s figures show that this long-term approach has paid off and we are able to continue to offer more families places at their preferred schools, which is excellent news.

“We always remind parents that putting down only one or two schools doesn’t increase your chances of getting in there and we strongly recommend that all families visit their local schools and then use all four preferences on their application form.”

All applications are made online, applicants will be able to log on to the website and see their offers on 16 April 2020. Emails will also be sent out on offer day.

Any children that have not been offered their first preference and wish to pursue alternative schools can go into their My Telford account and request a review of the school place by 1 May 2020.  For further information can be found online at www.telford.gov.uk/admissions or contact admissions@telford.gov.uk
