Activity of young people spikes in Telford and Wrekin

Young people in Telford and Wrekin are getting active according to the latest Active Lives Children and Young People Survey produced by Sport England.

The number of young people exercising for at least 150 minutes a week, has increased by 15.8 per cent compared to the previous 12 months in Telford and Wrekin – a significant increase.

The survey also revealed a drop of 13.7 per cent in the number of inactive people doing less than 30 minutes activity a week months in Telford and Wrekin – a significant decrease.

Andy Burford, Cabinet Member for Health Social Care, said: “This is fabulous news and reflects the work we have done encouraging our communities to promote young people’s health and wellbeing.

“In particular, we have worked hard to drive up activity by working closely with schools in Telford and Wrekin.

“We have supported 39 early years and schools settings to take up of the Daily Mile, an initiative where young people walk or jog a mile on a regular basis.

“As part of our Let’s Get Telford Active Campaign we helped fund four new all-weather tracks in schools.

“Together with 11 schools we ran a pilot schemes to bring 30 minutes of activity to school timetables each day and to reduce sedentary behavior.

“Eleven community organisations ran holiday activities and eat well sessions in over the summer to keep young people active in the summer holidays.

“And nearly 150 miles was run or walked by classrooms taking part in the Telford Schools Challenge this November.

“Health and wellbeing needs to be everybody’s business, and we are lucky in Telford and Wrekin to have vibrant and active communities, full of passionate people who want to give a helping hand.”
