The 2024 Telford and Wrekin Annual Public Health Report, recently presented at the Health & Wellbeing Board* outlines ongoing collaborative efforts of the Council and local community partners to help improve the emotional health and wellbeing of children and young people in Telford and Wrekin.

Improving the wellbeing of children and young people in Telford and Wrekin remains a top priority for the Council and local partners

The report highlights the ongoing impact of the pandemic on young people’s lives and makes recommendations to strengthen the support available to them and their families.

The report has been centred on the feedback collected from the young people of the borough, through focus groups and an online survey, regarding what enhances their emotional wellbeing.

Councillor Kelly Middleton, Cabinet Member for healthy, safer, stronger communities and partnerships said: “Improving social, emotional and mental health for our children and young people is one of our Council’s top priorities.

“Healthy, happy children learn well, paving the way for broader opportunities as they grow to lead happy and healthy lives.

“I’m pleased as such that the focus of this year’s Public Health Report is on the borough’s children and young people’s emotional wellbeing, and I would like to say a big thank all the young people who contributed their views through the focus groups and survey.

“It celebrates excellent projects already supporting families, schools and the community in building young people’s resilience and enhancing emotional health, such as the Young People’s Year of Wellbeing campaign, Best Start for Life – Family Hubs programme and many others.

“While we are proud of the wide range of emotional wellbeing support available for children and young people and their families in our borough, there is more work to be done.

The report makes recommendations to ensure all children and young people in Telford and Wrekin feel valued, visible and emotionally well.

“Among the recommendations are building on our Council’s Young People’s Year of Wellbeing campaign, to give young people practical tips and advice they can use in daily life as well as connecting them to mental health support services in the borough, when they need them.

“I encourage all young people across the borough, their parents and carers to join this campaign by visiting www.telford.gov.uk/youngpersonswellbeing

“Further recommendations of the report include enhancing emotional wellbeing support in education settings, providing life skills training for young people and more.
