Leader and Cabinet Members Young Person Grant to continue for 2025-26
Telford & Wrekin Council has noted the success of the most recent Leader and Cabinet Members Young Person Grant where 67 young people were awarded with grants to help them unlock their career potential.
At their meeting on Thursday 11 April, the cabinet agreed to fund the scheme for 2025-26 to support more young people in achieving their education and career ambitions.
The latest Leader and Cabinet Members Young Person Grant 2023/24 - which launched in December 2023 - attracted over 100 applications. At the awards ceremony last month funding was awarded to the successful applicants to enable them to purchase items like laptops, bikes, sports equipment, or travel passes. Each applicant was given a maximum of £500.
The scheme, which is open to residents aged 15 to 25, has run since 2017. Through the pandemic the funding was reallocated to support even more young people through the Laptops for Learning Scheme which provided devices to help them continue their education during lockdown.
Councillor Shaun Davies, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council (Lab), said: “Year on year we are seeing an increase in applications for our Young Person Grant which highlights just how valuable this scheme is. By continuing to offer this funding we are supporting some of our youngest residents to access education, employment, and training opportunities and I'm immensely proud that we can be part of their journey and help support their development.”
The Leader and Cabinet Members’ Young Person Grant 2023/24 scheme was also supported through sponsorship and match funding from external partners; Arriva; Balfour Beatty; Veolia and through the Virgin Media 02 Business Fund.
Young people can learn more about the latest grant, discover stories from successful applicants, and submit their applications for the grant scheme on our website, www.telford.gov.uk/ypg.
