Primary schools win road safety competition
During National Road Safety Week, four borough primary schools have received awards for their designs of road safety messages – which will be displayed on regular rotation over the coming months at the Hortonwood traffic roundabout.
This follows a Road Safety Primary schools competition organised earlier in the year by the local automotive company DENSO, in partnership with Telford & Wrekin Council.
Winning designs in four categories from around 30 entries are:
• Be Bright, Be Seen – Lilleshall Primary School
• Bikeability – Redhill Primary
• Pedestrian Safety – HLC Primary
• Seatbelt Safety – St Matthews C of E Primary, Donnington
In addition to receiving their awards at DENSO, the winners will have their designs published in the Shropshire Star and the schools will each receive a bursary of £500 to promote road safety.
DENSO spokesman Phil Tomlinson said: ““As an automotive company, road safety is vitally important to us and that’s why we partnered with Telford & Wrekin Council to launch this competition.
Our ultimate, shared aim is to engage the next generation in the promotion of road safety and safe behaviour in the built environment.
“We’ve received so many creative designs from borough primary schools and we want to thank everyone who has taken part.
“Congratulations to the winners, we are looking forward to seeing their designs displayed on the Community Island at Hortonwood – we hope they will inspire all who see them to keep safe on our roads.”
Angie Astley, the Council’s Assistant Director Customer & Neighbourhood Services said: “Our road safety teams regularly visit schools and local groups to promote road safety messages – educating children and young people, teachers, parents and carers.
“This competition for primary schools again helps us reinforce the importance of staying safe on our roads and the part we all need to play in this.
“It couldn’t have been a better moment to award and congratulate the winners than during the National Road Safety week, so we can promote their designs and messages as an inspiration to everyone.
“I want to thank DENSO for helping us to do that.”
Telford & Wrekin Council’s road safety team has been building a close partnership with DENSO over the past year, which has seen DENSO subsidise the Bikeability programme, resulting in a growth in numbers and promote other key programmes in the community.
