It would be a frightening waste not to recycle your pumpkin

Telford and Wrekin’s food waste service is screaming out for pumpkins this Halloween.

It would be a frightening waste not to recycle your pumpkin

Almost 10 million pumpkins are sold in the UK every year for carving during the scariest season. This year, Veolia is asking residents to recycle them in their food caddies.

The weekly food waste service has already collected more than 600 tonnes of food waste and crews are hoping to recycle even more by encouraging residents to recycle their pumpkins rather than put them in the red top wheelie bin.

Steve Mitchell, West Midlands Director for Veolia, said: “Pumpkins are a wonderful way to celebrate Halloween, but we all know how quickly they can start to breakdown. So we would like to encourage residents to put them in their outdoor food caddies for their weekly collection, to be recycled into energy and fertiliser for farming”

Residents can also recycle the seeds and flesh from inside the pumpkin. Steve added: “We know that some of the larger pumpkins will take up a lot of room in the outdoor caddies, so residents can use their 7ltr kitchen caddy as extra storage and present at the kerbside with their other containers. This additional service will run from Monday 4th November to Friday 8th November.”
