HMO manager fined

Kalim Hussain, of Parkdale in Hadley appeared before Shropshire Magistrates sitting at Telford Justice Centre yesterday (Monday 22 July).

The court heard that the property he managed in Bank Road, Wellington was inspected by officers from Telford & Wrekin Council in November last year. Among the findings were:

•Defective fire doors to the bedrooms

•Incomplete mains powered smoke detection system throughout the first floor accommodation

•Fire extinguisher not maintained

•No prominent display of his name, address and contact number should his tenants need to contact him.

In December 2018 Mr Hussain was requested to provide documentation including copies of tenancy agreements and an electrical safety certificate, all of which he failed to provide.

In court yesterday, Mr Hussain pleaded guilty to four charges under The Management of Houses in Multiple Occupation (England) Regulations 2006/372, one charge under the Housing Act 2004 and one charge under the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976.

He was fined £180 for each of the six offences and was ordered to pay costs of £2,318 and a victim surcharge of £30 bringing the total to £3,428.

Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Enforcement said: “It is vital, for the safety of tenants, that the homes they rent and live in are safe, that the necessary fire precautions are in place and that they are managed well. That is why our officers carry out inspections of properties to ensure they remain free from disrepair.”
