Switch Telford records over 1,300 switches since launch

Since its launch in spring 2017, Switch Telford, the Council’s energy price comparison and switching website, has recorded over 1,300 switches of gas & electricity suppliers, helping households save hundreds of pounds on the average household energy bill.

Switch Telford records over 1,300 switches since launch

The Council launched “Switch Telford” (www.switch.telford.gov.uk) in partnership with a leading energy switching provider, which is Ofgem accredited - to make it easier for anyone to save money on their household energy bills.

You don’t even need to live in the borough to benefit.

www.switch.telford.gov.uk determines best deals for each household and gives independent advice on the cheapest tariff.

Commission is paid to the Council via the energy suppliers who use the site, the service is free to use and doesn’t affect the tariffs that people pay.

All the commission earned by the Council through Switch Telford – more than £16,000 in its first two years - goes to sustaining Council services for vulnerable people from the Borough.

Residents using this service are able to see in one place, free of charge, all the gas and electricity deals on the market in real time and can switch supplier quickly and easily, in as little as five minutes.

When making the switch, they don’t even have to contact their old supplier or change any direct debits, as the energy site will do this for them.

Felicity Mercer, Assistant Director for Commercial Services at Telford & Wrekin Council said: “Switch Telford has been a real success, with more than 1,300 switches now recorded and there’s no reason why more people can’t benefit.

“We want to encourage more households to switch their gas and electricity provider through our service and make considerable savings.

“This is even more important now, as from April 2019 energy prices are going up - all of the UK’s “Big Six” energy suppliers are increasing standard rate tariffs, in line with the Ofgem Energy Price Cap increase.

“Comparing tariffs and switching supplier is the best way for people to make savings on their energy bills – and Switch Telford helps with this.”

The Energy Switching site builds on the Council’s work to help people from the Borough save money.

The Telford Loyalty Card (TLC) is another way the Council helps residents to save money and offers discounts at hundreds of borough businesses.
LEAP (Local Energy Advice Programme) is also a free of charge service that helps eligible borough households to save money and keep their homes warm and cosy.

* Between 1 July 2018 and 31 December 2018, at least 10% of people who switched energy supplier for both gas & electricity with Switch Telford’s Ofgem accredited switching provider saved £447 or more.
