A442 improvements will deliver savings for years to come

The third phase of the A422 Queensway project in Telford and Wrekin is reaching the final stages of work and is on track for completion this summer.

A442 improvements will deliver savings for years to come

The project to improve 31 bridges, more than 400 street lights and 13 miles of safety barriers as well as drainage, kerbs, signs and central reservations has cost in the region of £10m and will create a transport infrastructure that’s fit for the future and able to support the 30,000 vehicles using the road every day.

Councillor Lee Carter (Labour) Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Regeneration and the High Street said: “Work like this is always an inconvenience and we’d like to thank everyone for their patience while we undertake this work.

“It’s not something that’s undertaken lightly, it’s essential to keep part of our borough’s most important network in good condition - without the need for any further major work for many years to come.”

The work taking place requires collaboration with a host of partners. For example, emergency services are notified of full road closures and made aware of alternative routes.

The council’s cleaning contractor IdVerde, removes litter from the verges - collecting 64 bags of litter over a 12 day period this year in one of several clean ups, avoiding further lane closures.

Littering from vehicles is a growing problem for the council and its enforcement team will now be patrolling the stretch of road and issuing fines, building on the 110 issued since April 2021.

This project is part of more than £50million of investment into Telford’s highways with the majority of the capital investment programme being spent on roads and footpaths as well as bridges and other structures, drainage, council-owned assets, street furniture, lighting and lines.

There is also significant investment into developing sustainable transport, off-street parking, road safety schemes and other major and environmental projects.
