Significant savings with award of Highways Contract
Telford & Wrekin Council has awarded its highways contract for the next seven years to Balfour Beatty Living Places – realising significant savings worth approximately £200,000 a year as well as delivering an enhanced service.
It is intended that the contract will run from April 2019 to March 2026, with the possibility for this to be extended for a further seven years up to 2032, subject to good performance.
Balfour Beatty Living Places is a major provider of highways, street lighting and public realm services that works in long-term partnerships with local authorities.
The contract award follows an extensive tendering process, after which Balfour Beatty Living Places have been chosen from three shortlisted tenders.
The delivery of the contract will mean better roads, paths and structures with a strong focus on getting it right first time, driven through the management of the contract.
This will be combined with a huge financial investment of an additional £20m over the first two years of the contract by the Council into improving roads, paths, structures, drainage and other highway assets through the Pride in Our Community scheme.
The contract includes reactive maintenance (potholes), drainage cleansing, emergency response, winter gritting and the Council’s capital programme into roads, paths, structures and other highways assets.

Councillor Hilda Rhodes, cabinet member for transport, roads and broadband, said: “This is a key contract for the Council at a time when we are investing very heavily in improving roads and footpaths across the borough through our £45 million Pride in Our Community programme.
“The savings from the contract will have no effect on the major capital investment that we are making between now and April 2021 targeting roads in particular.”
