Housing developer to back DIY SOS reception

Housing developer Lovell is sponsoring a special civic reception to thank hundreds of volunteers, who worked tirelessly along with the BBC's DIY SOS programme to come to the aid of local lad Matthew Cooper and his family.

Thanks to Lovell’s financial support, Telford & Wrekin Council is able to host the special celebration on Thursday, September 21 at Oakengates Theatre between 4 and 5.30pm.

Around 200 invitations have been sent out by the BBC on behalf of Council Leader Shaun Davies and Mayor of Telford & Wrekin, Councillor Stephen Reynolds to suppliers, labourers and an army of other volunteers who rolled up their sleeves, free of charge, to transform Matthew’s home in Trench.

Matthew Cooper had been cared for at Birmingham Children’s Hospital since August 2015 after he was diagnosed with brain and spinal cancer. After more than a year in hospital, he had finished his chemotherapy and had been living in a rented house until the family home in Springfield, Trench was made suitable for his needs by the BBC team and volunteers.

Councillor Davies said: “With Lovell’s help we will be able to formally thank the outstanding achievement of people who took part and the positive effect the build had on the Cooper family.

“It showed the very best of our borough, bringing people together and demonstrating how ready we are to help each other. There was also a great sense of community and pride that people got from this. I hope that we can continue to build on that spirit and get even more people involved in almost 100 other volunteering opportunities across the borough.”

Stuart Penn, regional managing director said: “As a major developer of new homes in the borough, we at Lovell are delighted to be able to support this event being hosted by the Council in order to recognise the hard work and great community spirit in Telford.

“We are also proud to have been involved in helping to transform Matthew and his family’s life, and to be a part of such a deserving cause.”

Whether you've got an hour, a week or want to turn your hand at learning a new skill, or whatever's your thing, volunteering can enhance career prospects, build confidence and even improve your health. Get in touch today and visit www.volunteertelford.co.uk to see what’s on offer.

Lovell is the building partner for Nuplace and the Council and are building almost 300 new homes for private rent across the borough.
