Save a life as a volunteer blood pressure checker

Telford & Wrekin Council are looking for volunteers who want to support their local communities and save lives as blood pressure checkers.

The blood pressure checkers will be based at events and clinics in local community settings, making it easier for people to have their blood pressure tested.

High blood pressure is serious and increases heart attack and stroke risk - two leading causes of death in the UK.

Around 1 in 4 adults in the UK have high blood pressure, but many don't know it until it is too late as there are often no symptoms.

The council is training people who apply to become Health Champions to become blood pressure checkers.

Cllr Kelly Middleton (Lab), cabinet member for leisure, public health and wellbeing, equalities and partnerships, said:

"High blood pressure is known as the silent killer as it has no symptoms, so blood pressure checkers will be lifesavers for many in the borough.

"Volunteering as a blood pressure checker is a flexible opportunity, one that people can work into their everyday life by committing the time they want to provide.

“All our blood pressure checkers receive extensive training and support to make sure people have they have the confidence they need to take people’s blood pressure.

"We know that volunteers who do this experience a boost to their wellbeing and gain a sense of purpose – they also make new friends and gain skills.

"Whether they are blood pressure checkers or not, Health Champions play a vital role in our borough, bringing people together to make communities stronger and more resilient.

"This volunteering opportunity is a great and fulfilling way to spend your spare time."

People can register to become a blood pressure checker by applying to be a Health Champion.
