Southwater One lights up white to mark White Ribbon Day
As part of White Ribbon Day 2020 Telford and Wrekin Council lit up Southwater One white last night to raise awareness of, and help reduce domestic abuse against women.
Since2013 Telford has been a White Ribbon town, an accreditation that is only givento organisations that pledge to make adifference in their communities to end violence against women, which includes acommitment to protecting and caring forvictims of domestic abuse.
CouncillorRichard Overton, Cabinet Member for Enforcement, Community Safety and customerservices, said: “Eradicating domestic abuse is a fundamental part of ourcommitment to protect and care for everyone in our borough.
“Withpeople spending more time a home it has been important to ensure that those whoare victims of domestic abuse have the help and support available to them thisyear, and to stand up to domestic abuse against women.”
“Domesticabuse is never acceptable, so I would encourage men to take the White Ribbonpledge never to commit, excuse or remain silent about male domesticabuse against women.”
Earlierin the year Telford and Wrekin Council awarded a grant of £65,900, following asuccessful bid, to help provide vital support to victims of domestic abuse andtheir children within safer accommodation.
CouncillorRae Evans, the cabinet’s Ribbon Champion lead for the prevention ofdomestic abuse, said: “Domestic abuse in any form cannot be tolerated and weare pleased to have been able to add to the essential, potentially life-savingsupport services we have in the borough for this important key priority.
“Weneed to work together to prevent violence and make sure our communities aresafe for everyone and I’d like to thank all the partners and volunteers whohave taken part in this year’s amazing campaign.”
