Council makes new commitment to protect employees from domestic abuse
Telford & Wrekin Council has signed up to GMB's domestic abuse charter, to support and aid employees who experience domestic abuse.
Employers that sign the charter commit to supporting employees experiencing domestic abuse to ensure they will not be disadvantaged at work.
At the same time, Telford & Wrekin Council has just introduced a new domestic abuse policy to better care for and protect its employees.
Cllr Rae Evans, cabinet lead for the prevention of domestic abuse, said:
"Any form of domestic abuse is totally unacceptable, and the new domestic abuse policy reinforces that stance.
"Signing the GMB domestic abuse charter also affirms our commitment, and we’d encourage other employers to do the same.
“We know that the current pandemic has impacted on rates of abuse and that home is not a safe space for everyone.
"With more people working from home, it is even more important that our workplace is a safe space for our staff.”
"As a result, we will be supporting managers to ensure they have the tools to help employees.
"This is essential work because we know that anyone can experience domestic abuse, irrespective of age, sex, class, race or ethnic background."
Cllr Shaun Davies, Leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said:
“Protecting and supporting employees from domestic abuse should be high on the agenda for any employer, and so I would like to praise the GMB union for pushing this important issue.
“Signing the GMB domestic abuse charter shows we share that commitment and further strengthens the positive relationship we have with them.”
Samantha Warburton, GMB Regional Organiser, said:
"We are pleased that Telford & Wrekin Council, one of the borough's largest employers, recognises that domestic abuse is a workplace issue and are actively supporting staff who may be affected, not only due to Covid but now with the pressures of Christmas"
