Friendships in focus as Learning Disability Week launches
Incredible friendships and their positive impacts are at the forefront of Learning Disability Week which launches today.
Telford & Wrekin Council is today lending its support to the national event run by charity Mencap – with our My Options service leading the way.
We know that during the coronavirus pandemic it has been harder than ever to keep in touch with friends – but we have seen the fantastic benefits of people accessing technology to keep up to date with information and keep connected.
Our My Options team has been using the internet as a way of keeping in touch with our day centre customers who are unable to see each other in person.
The team has been making the most of digital technology to keep people connected safely using social media.
The My Options team has been supporting people to use their iPads and laptops confidently in order to have regular virtual get-togethers, to learn new skills, to share information and enjoy regular social catch ups with friends old and new.
Councillor Andy Burford, Cabinet Member for Health and Social Care, said: “We are delighted to mark Learning Disability Week here in Telford & Wrekin.
“The work that has been going on by our learning disability teams in our community during the coronavirus pandemic has been incredible and new friends have been made and existing friendships have reached another level.
“If anything it has brought us all closer together as a community.”
Deb Williams, Service Delivery Manager for My Options, said: “It has been great to see how technology has given people a real opportunity to keep connected through this difficult time.
“It was a worrying time when we had to cease day services due to the pandemic back in March, but the way everybody has pulled together has been outstanding.
“I want to thank all the staff and all those who use the services for the way they have embraced the new way we have been working.
“Learning Disability Week is a great way to reflect on friendships made and strengthened during this time and I could not be prouder.”
Sarah Dillon, Adult Social Care director, added: “Learning Disability Week is the perfect time to reflect on the wonderful work being done by the team.
“I love seeing pictures and reading stories about how the service has continued and gone from strength to strength during this time and this is a great time to reflect on the excellent work we have going on here at Telford & Wrekin Council.”
To celebrate Learning Disability Week we are asking you to share your friendship story with us. Why not take a picture or even a video telling us about your friends?
They can be shared on our Twitter or Facebook pages and by Mencap nationally if you use the hashtag #MencapFamily
