Helping vulnerable people into good quality homes

Telford & Wrekin Council’s commitment to make the borough a great place in which to live also means helping the borough’s older and vulnerable residents access good quality housing to help them live independently for longer.

Helping vulnerable people into good quality homes

The Council’s Cabinet is being recommended to approve a new Specialist and Supported Accommodation Strategy to look at how it can meet the future housing needs of the borough’s growing numbers of older people, vulnerable working age adults and young people.

The draft strategy to be considered by the Cabinet has already identified the needs of known vulnerable groups that aren’t being met now and the future needs over the next decade, including the types of housing that will be needed for older people in the future.

It plans to do this by working with housing, support, care and community organisations to make best use of existing accommodation, adapt current mainstream housing to suit, develop new specialist and supported accommodation and make sure the right care services are in place to help people live independently in their own homes.

This will lead to a wide range of supported accommodation for people of all ages to live independently, more adapted housing for people with physical disabilities and long term health conditions and help for family carers so they can continue to have an independent life.

Councillor David Wright, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing said: “As the borough’s population increases we expect there to be more older and vulnerable people with support needs.

“As part of our plan to Protect, Care and Invest to Create a Better Borough, the Council is committed to supporting our most vulnerable residents and that includes giving them access to suitable housing. It’s good for a person’s health and wellbeing and it helps them live independently for longer.

“We want to secure the best possible quality of life for our older and vulnerable citizens both now and in the future. This means delivering a range of housing that enables people to live independently, with support and care where necessary.”

The Specialist and Supported Accommodation Strategy 2020-25 is being launched alongside the Housing Strategy and is recommended for approval by Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet when it meets on Thursday 18 June.
