Be kind this Mental Health Awareness Week

Telford and Wrekin Council will be encouraging people to make small acts of kindness during this Mental Health Awareness Week (Monday 18 May – Sunday 24 May 2020).

Be kind this Mental Health Awareness Week

In a time of social distancing small acts of kindness can help us all to connect with others emotionally during the pandemic.

Andy Burford, cabinet member for health and social care, said: “Kindness strengthens relationships, develops community, and deepens solidarity. It is a cornerstone of our individual and collective mental health.

“One small act of kindness can lift someone’s mood and often inspires others to make acts of kindness of their own.

“You could call a friend that you haven’t spoken to for a while, tell someone you know that you are proud of them, make a cup of tea for someone you live with or offer help to vulnerable neighbour.”

Earlier this month, Telford & Wrekin Council announced that seven local organisations are set to receive a share of £25,000 from Telford & Wrekin Council to bolster mental health and bereavement support in the borough during the pandemic.

With these funds local organisations will be able to deliver:

  • Listening and one to one support for mental health and bereavement support delivered over the phone and video chat.
  • Online support groups focusing on a range of subjects from bereavement and loss, to anxiety and coping strategies.
  • Support for parents to help their children cope with loss as a result of coronavirus.
  • A dedicated support offer to staff working in care homes in Telford.

Andy Burford, cabinet member for Health and social care, added: “It’s important to provide extra support to local organisations at this time.

“If you are experiencing stress, anxiety or concerns about your mental health during this time, there is local help out there – don’t be afraid to ask for it.

“The council will continue to work hard with local organisations to secure more funding from national pots to further improve local mental health support.”
