New books to support better children’s mental health

Telford & Wrekin Libraries is promoting a special “Reading Well for Children” booklist, to support the mental health and wellbeing of children and their families – as part of Children’s Mental Health Week.

The booklist, just launched by the Reading Agency, is available in Telford & Wrekin Libraries locations and covers 33 titles, providing useful information, advice and support for children and families to cope with different feelings and worries, challenges of daily life and getting through a tough time.

The booklist is mainly targeted at Key Stage 2 children, but also includes a wide range of reading levels to support less confident readers, and to encourage children to read together with their siblings and carers.

Anyone interested can borrow the books from Telford & Wrekin Libraries locations in the next weeks or download available copies as ebooks from Libraries website.

They can also come along to the “Reading Well for Children Launch” event in Southwater Library, on Wednesday 5 February, between 2pm and 5pm – to have a look at the titles displayed and to chat about them with a Library adviser.

Councillor Rae Evans, Cabinet Member for Customer Services, Partnerships, Culture & Leisure said: “Throughout the year, Telford & Wrekin Libraries are providing a wide range of free activities for children of different ages in the borough, such as Bounce and Ryme sessions, arts and crafts, lego and coding clubs, Harry Potter book nights and many more.

“The “Reading Well for Children” event and booklist available in our libraries comes at just the right time to support our children and young people’s mental health, by encouraging them to read books that have been endorsed by experts in the field”.

“We hope that lots of our families will have a look and put those books on their reading list in the coming weeks.”
