Improvements help Newport boost
Newport’s key community buildings have been undergoing significant improvements, thanks to the Telford 50 Legacy Fund.
Telford & Wrekin Council has offered £150,000 grant support to each of the borough’s five main towns, including Newport, to refurbish and modernise community buildings as part of Telford 50 celebrations.
The Hub in central Newport is now a more attractive and spacious community venue with new facilities and new IT equipment.
Louise Tunks, Deputy Clerk at Newport Town Council said: “As Trustees of The Hub and with the help of the Telford 50 legacy grant, Newport Town Council has managed a major refurbishment of The Hub this year, comprising of roof works, electrics, plumbing, flooring, new equipment and much more.
“The result is a more engaging and fit for purpose venue for young people as well as the wider community.
“We’ve just relaunched this venue for community groups to meet and organise events and clubs following the refurbishment and are making plans to host a Youth Café alongside a Youth Club facility in the New Year.
“We hope many more groups will now use this venue for their activities.”
Another Newport building that has seen a wide range of improvements thanks to Telford 50 Legacy grant is The Guildhall, a central prestigious grade II * listed building, which hosts a variety of events (weddings, civil ceremonies, public meetings, school trips).
Earlier in the year, the Telford 50 grant has also helped the Scout HQ on Longford Road with a significant roof refurbishment, as part of the centre’s development, enabling the Scout Group to meet all year round.
Newport Town Mayor, Cllr Peter Scott said: “I am really thankful to Newport Town Council and Telford & Wrekin Council for their support – without it, we wouldn’t have been able to deliver these improvements to these key community buildings in Newport, which are being used by many people and groups in the town. “
Council Leader Shaun Davies said: “Newport is among the five borough’s main towns that the Telford 50 legacy grant has supported – as with the other Town Councils, we welcome the refurbishment works being completed and hope people will use and enjoy these community buildings and facilities long into the future.”
The £2 million Telford 50 Legacy Fund supports a mix of physical schemes as well as other projects that help tackle key social issues in the borough and reduce demand on council services.
