Borough residents are invited to a free event which will celebrate the diversity of the borough on Sunday 3 November.

Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member Raj Mehta is using his role to promote inclusivity by hosting the event which will bring together local community groups to promote mutual understanding.

The free event called “Connecting Communities” is being held at The Place theatre and The Wakes in Oakengates.
The event will comprise an exhibition and activities from 2pm - 4.30pm with stalls set up by groups and organisations to showcase what they offer. These will include:

  • Chinese calligraphy and tea making
  • Sikh martial arts
  • Indian Yoga Guru workshop
  • Contemporary Indian dance workshop
  • YMCA Pebble art
  • Displays of traditional dress from different regions of India and Asia
  • Sample foods from many different cultures
  • Music and singing
  • Army cadet climbing wall (subject to weather)
  • Information stands from many different community groups.

The afternoon will be completed with a multicultural variety performance in the main theatre auditorium from 5-7pm.
Councillor Raj Mehta, cabinet member for Community and Inclusivity, said: “I’m excited for local people to come and see all of the different communities who live and work in Telford and Wrekin.

“We have such a diverse culture here and my event will be a celebration of this diversity.”

Dr. Dheeraj P. Joshi, Consulate General of India in Birmingham, will be teaching a yoga workshop open to beginners through to more advanced yogis at The Wakes from 2.30 – 4pm.

The free event will run 2-7pm on Sunday 3 November at The Place theatre and The Wakes in Oakengates. Some activities and workshops may be limited on a first come first served basis.
