Council further reduces CO2 emissions, while improving highway works

Since using warm mix asphalt in major highways resurfacing schemes, Telford & Wrekin Council has contributed to reducing CO2 emissions, while improving highways throughout the borough.

A recent national report on Highways (‘Working for better roads’ from the All Party Parliamentary Group) highlights the environmental, safety and performance benefits of warm mix asphalt use, encouraging authorities to switch to it in road construction and maintenance.

Telford & Wrekin Council has been using warm mixes in various road schemes since 2016. Our strategy is to exclusively use this material for all major resurfacing schemes, this includes schemes recently completed at Trench Lock Interchange, Whitchurch Drive and Halesfield 10 by the council’s new contractor Balfour Beatty Living Places.

This has helped reduced the carbon footprint on roads, further strengthening the Council’s commitment to a better and cleaner environment.

Furthermore, it has also reduced disruption caused by the works through less delays, as laying the asphalt at a lower temperature allows the roads to be re-opened quicker.

Cllr Richard Overton, Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services, Enforcement and The Pride programme said: “We very much welcome the findings of the recent “Working for better roads” national report as it highlights the good work that’s been taking place across the borough in the last few years.

“The use of warm mix asphalt (as a nationally acknowledged innovative technology) in our road works has clearly proven to have considerable benefits for the environment as well as for improving our overall work productivity and reducing disruption for road users.

“It goes without saying that we are committed to extend its use to further enhance its benefits.”
