Landlords benefit from accreditation scheme
Joining Telford & Wrekin Council’s landlord accreditation scheme provides landlords and lettings agents with many benefits which are not available to non-members.
The council’s landlord accreditation scheme, part of the Council’s Better Homes For All package, provides landlords and lettings agents the opportunity of training and advice to support their private lettings as well as access to other benefits. This provides reassurance to tenants that their landlord is reputable as they sign up to a code of conduct.
Some of the benefits of the scheme include:
• Information changes in the law and updates on landlord matters
• A dedicated officer at hand to offer help, advice and support
• On-line training for continual development
• 3 free waste passes per year in the form of access to Council Recycling Centres to dispose of unwanted items tenants leave behind
Nick Gauden explains why he joined the scheme: “It enables me to keep up to date with rapidly changing legislation affecting the private rental sector. Expert in-house advice and support is available when I need it. The help to solve one problem alone is worth more than the subscription. The scheme provides me with a structure to follow which ensures high standards are maintained for my tenants. My tenants are made aware that they have responsibilities too. Additionally they have the peace of mind to know they are dealing with a landlord whose properties meet the required standards.”
Cllr Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Enforcement, said: “All landlords tend to get a bad reputation even though they are many good landlords out there. The accreditation scheme allows good landlords to distance themselves from rogue landlords. The scheme awards accreditation to these reputable landlords who undergo training and comply with our code of conduct.
Becoming accredited, along with undertaking eLearning courses, provides landlords with knowledge on key issues and how to implement change when it is required.

The Better Homes For All scheme includes a range of measures to improve the standards of private rented housing in the borough, which includes a new Rogue Landlord taskforce to crackdown and prosecute bad landlords who provide substandard accommodation.
