Response to Prime Minister’s Questions and CSE
We are extremely surprised that the MP raised the independent inquiry in to child sexual exploitation as an issue at Prime Minister’s Questions.
She has been thoroughly briefed on the process that Telford & Wrekin Council is undertaking to ensure that the forthcoming inquiry is as independent as possible.
Our priority is to ensure that we get the inquiry right for people who have been so seriously affected by child sexual exploitation.
We also find it somewhat ironic that the Prime Minister chose to comment, given that her Government refused our request on a number of occasions to hold a statutory Government led inquiry into child sexual exploitation in Telford. We have these refusals in writing.
As our MP is aware, the inquiry process is now in the hands of the commissioning body, Eversheds Sutherland.
A survivor’s representative said: “As we have said on previous occasions, some survivors have been waiting up to 40 years for answers. So it’s important to us that this independent inquiry in to child sexual exploitation isn’t rushed and that everyone takes the time to ensure it provides the answers survivors and their families are looking for.”
