Students mix business and pleasure at Wellington this Saturday
The winners of the Young High Street Challenge will be setting up stall at the Market Square in Wellington on Saturday to showcase their business ideas for a shop on the high street and to brighten up the market.
Burton Borough and Haberdashers Adams students, joint winners of the challenge to improve the look and feel of Wellington Market, will also be canvasing public opinion on their creative ideas.
The three schools took part in a borough-wide, Dragon’s Den style competition earlier this year and beat off competition from five other schools to see their ideas brought to life with funding from Telford & Wrekin Council’s Pride in Our Community High Street Fund.
Cllr Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for finance, commercial services and economic development, will be at the event on Saturday. He said: “Our high streets are vital for bringing communities together. We know there are challenges, but we also know there are opportunities. We are working hard to help our high streets thrive through a range of grants and schemes that support local businesses.
“The enthusiasm and energy of all of the young people who took part in this challenge was brilliant. They had some fantastic ideas to keep our high streets vibrant and relevant to young people. I am looking forward to seeing how their ideas have developed since winning the competition.”
The Young High Street Challenge stall will be at the Market Square in Wellington from 10am to 4pm on Saturday 17 November. There will be live music playing throughout the day, food on sale and free giveaways of retro sweets plus other goodies.
