Telford and Wrekin council continues to help older and disabled residents to continue living independently by providing a range of housing grants.

Council continues to help elderly and disabled residents to be able to stay living in their homes

The most flexible grants offered are well-being grants for equipment or assistance that either enables someone to be discharged from hospital or prevents someone being admitted in the first place.  This could be as simple as moving someone’s bed downstairs or minor adaptations.

As the aging population increases, the elderly and disabled need to be able to continue living in their homes.  This in turn, reduces hospital admissions or residential care and speed up hospital discharges.

Well-being grants were introduced in 2016 and the council have been successful in increasing take-up, from £36k in 2016/17 to £191k in 2017/18.  Additional Government funding has been given for this year which will mean even more of these grants can be funded.

Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s deputy leader , said: “The smallest of well-being grants are making a real difference to people’s lives, enabling people to live independently in their own homes, freeing up much-needed hospital beds and also reducing the burden on the public purse.”
