Ironbridge loos twinned to save lives ‘one toilet at a time’
The recently refurbished public loos in The Square in Ironbridge are being twinned with loos in Malawi in support of an international charity’s crusade to help those in poorer countries have access to proper toilets and clean water.
The Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions wanted to support the charity and recently approached the Council to ask if the public loos in Ironbridge could be twinned with loos in Malawi. In return for making a donation to the charity, the Lions were given certificates showing a photo of the twinned loos, their location and GPS coordinates.
These certificates will now mounted in the Ironbridge loos to help raise awareness of the cause and hopefully inspire those using the facilities to find out more.
Cllr Rae Evans, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for people services, visitor economy and partnerships, said: “We take things like toilets and hot and cold running water for granted, and don’t realise how lucky we are. Toilet Twinning aims to save lives, ‘one toilet at a time’. We’re delighted to be able to support them in their quest and I’m sure that the residents of the Gorge will be too.”
Colin Thompson, Secretary of the Ironbridge and Severn Gorge Lions, said: “Thank you to the Council for agreeing to this. Ironbridge is a world heritage site that attracts visitors from across the country and beyond. Many of them will use the facilities during their visit, and so these toilets are ideal to maximise publicity and perhaps motivate people to find out more and help spread the message.”
