The Telford 50 book, “The Ironbridge Ogre” is being launched on Thursday, 1 Nov
A special children’s book celebrating 50 years of Telford is being launched on Thursday (1 Nov) at Southwater Library, 1st floor (11am – 2pm).
The Ironbridge Ogre is a young children's mythical story book set in and around Telford.
It is written and illustrated by Toni Sian Williams - illustrator of local legendary tale 'The Wrekin Giant’.
The story has been created in celebration of 50 years of Telford, with its characters going to visit many renowned Telford landmarks including Wellington Market, Buildwas Power Station, Telford Town Park and of course the Iron Bridge.
The book's official launch will be held at Southwater Library on 1 November, from 11am until 2pm.
It is a free event, where parents and children are invited to attend – they will get to see the original drawings and character models as well as meet a real life ogre and take part in craft activities to make their own little ogre.
Copies of the book will be on sale within Southwater Library on the day and the author Toni Sian Williams will be signing them.
£1 from each book sale will be going to the local charity 'Christmas Smile' and will help to provide Christmas gifts to local children and families living in difficult circumstances.
Toni said: “I am very excited to launch this book during Telford’s 50th celebration year and I hope my story will inspire many children and parents to be proud of Telford’s landmarks and places of interest and to pass this feeling to the next generations.”
Cllr Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning said: "We would like to congratulate Toni for writing and illustrating such a great book that features some of the best places that Telford has on offer.
“This is a true legacy of Telford 50 – even more, as a special gift from the Council, every primary school in Telford will receive a limited edition copy of the book over the next few weeks.
“Schools will then be able to create their own lessons based on the story so children can learn about Telford’s past as well as about what makes our borough a great place to live, work and visit.”
