Two borough schools pen Southwater Legacy, as part of Telford 50
Two schools from the borough, Hollinswood Primary and Randlay Primary School, answered the Council’s appeal to get involved in the new Southwater Square development – as part of Telford 50 celebrations.
Hollinswood and Randlay Primary schools put forward short statements and words on how they felt about Telford as Telford approaches its 50th birthday.
These words were amongst a number of statements contributed by local organisations and members of the public to inspire a Telford 50 legacy project to be installed in the newly opened Southwater Square later this year.
As a ‘THANK YOU’ for the school’s involvement, a selection of pupils’ entries (on why they love living in Telford) have been displayed on the Wayfinding Digital Totems in Southwater throughout the summer holidays and will be shown again during Telford’s birthday month in November.
‘Telford is amazing and exciting’, ‘Telford is for all ages’, ‘A high quality place’, ‘Amazing parks’, ‘Lots of things to do’, ‘Yummy places to eat’, ‘Full of life’, ‘Awesome’, ‘Full of greatness’ – are a few of the pupils’ entries.
Also as part of thanking them for their contribution, the Council awarded each school with a tree to plant as a legacy of Telford 50.
Lynda Stolic, Headteacher of Randlay Primary School said: ‘We are delighted to have been involved in this project, celebrating Telford’s 50th birthday.
“It’s been genuinely remarkable to see how our pupils feel about Telford, their love for the town and the many things they enjoy doing in the borough.
“The Telford 50 tree growing now at our school is a way of passing on those feelings to the next generations that will hopefully share the same spirit.”
Glenn Atkinson, Headteacher of Hollinswood Primary School said: ‘Our young people have done really well in sharing their thoughts of Telford and it’s been great to see them so proud of our borough and of its achievements.
“They’ve loved taking part in the Telford 50 tree planting as well – and this is a symbol of our commitment for the town and of our mission for keeping this spirit going to all our present and future students.”
Cllr Shirley Reynolds, Cabinet Member for Education and Lifelong Learning said: ‘As part of Telford’s 50th birthday, we want to get as many schools in the borough as possible involved in the celebrations and in this legacy for our town.
“Throughout the year, it’s been great to see so many schools hosting special Telford 50 events including lessons on Telford’s history, taking part in legacy projects or in events such as Discover Digital.
“As we are approaching Telford’s 50th birthday date in November, we have even more plans for them – each primary school in the borough will soon get a special Telford 50 memento from the Council.”
Earlier this year the Council invited anyone feeling creative to get involved in Telford 50 celebrations and put forward short statements and words that have the chance of being incorporated into the new extension to Southwater Square.
Schools, organisations and members of the public took part in the Southwater Telford 50 legacy project.
These entries were used to inspire the project which will be installed later in the year.
