First raft of community buildings and facilities projects receive confirmation of grants from Telford 50 Legacy Fund
So far, 13 community groups from all over the borough have managed to firmly secure grants up to £20,000 from the Telford 50 Legacy Fund, for projects that will help them regenerate or buy community buildings and facilities.
In the coming weeks, more community groups will be confirmed as receiving grants.
The list of groups confirmed so far and a brief description of their projects can be downloaded from the Telford 50 website.
The confirmed projects the Telford 50 Legacy Fund supports include replacement of roofs, installation of solar panels, replacement of kitchen facilities, installation of lifts, refurbishment of toilets and many others.
The projects will be delivered by the end of March 2019.
As part of Telford’s 50th anniversary, the scheme was open earlier this year to community groups, charities, social enterprises, town and parish councils, schools or faith groups.
They could put forward their ideas for their share of the 240,000 grant to go towards improving a range of community buildings and facilities within Telford and Wrekin and helping create new facilities.
The £2 million Telford 50 Legacy Fund supports a mix of physical schemes as well as projects that help tackle important social issues and reduce demand on Council’s services.

These smaller grants fund is in addition to £750,000 the Telford 50 Legacy Fund has made available for five town council areas, Dawley, Madeley, Oakengates, Newport and Wellington, with each receiving £150,000 to refurbish or buy community buildings or facilities in their council’s area.
With match funding, the total value of this part of the Telford 50 Legacy Fund, combining the smaller grants fund and those to town councils, will total over £1.2 million.
Council Leader Shaun Davies said: "The refurbishment or purchase of community buildings and facilities is one of the key themes people told us they wanted the Telford 50 legacy funding to support.
“As such, thanks to Telford 50 Legacy fund, many groups will benefit from a range of community buildings and facilities projects that are set to make a real difference for their users – either by making the buildings more attractive or accessible, improving their kitchen facilities, reducing heating costs and so on.
More community groups from all over the borough will soon have their grant application firmly confirmed as well - this will definitely create a lasting legacy of Telford 50 all across the borough. “
Almost 1,400 people took part in a consultation in summer 2017 to find out what people wanted to see supported as a legacy of Telford 50.
The most popular themes included heritage and tourism, arts and culture and recreation.
People were also keen to see the funding allocated to support community events and projects.
