62,000 attend Telford 50th celebration events!

Three major events to celebrate Telford’s 50th birthday have attracted approximately 62,000 people.

About 12,000 came to Spring Into St George’s Day in April, 30,000 to the Telford Kite and Balloon Fiesta in May and a further 20,000 flocked to yesterday’s Telford Carnival.

Sunday’s carnival brought together the different communities of Telford in glorious sunshine to watch the colourful and lively procession, which started in the Addenbrooke House car park through the town centre and entered the Town Park past the ice rink.

Thousands of revellers lined the side of the road to cheer on the parade and many took to social media to celebrate the occasion and post pictures.

Will Bennett said on Twitter: “Feeling proud to live in Telford on its 50th birthday” and Wendy James said on Facebook: “Travelled from Wolves to witness the wonderful carnival! Outstanding!”

There was live music and entertainment on the main stage in the QEII Fields In Trust Town Park Arena right through until the early evening.

The carnival procession was inspired by everything from Telford’s past and present and was put together by volunteers, community groups and organisations from across the borough.

Councillor Rae Evans, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for Customer Services, Tourism and Partnerships, said: “I am delighted that the Telford 50 celebrations have been attended by so many thousands of people and that they have created such magical memories.

“Sunday’s carnival was a wonderful event and it was great to see so many smiling happy faces.

“The procession was a diverse as it was entertaining and there was a truly special atmosphere.

“Our community really made the event their own by creating the parade sculptures and it enabled them to learn many new skills along the way as well.

“And what’s more the Telford 50 celebrations don’t stop there – we have 14 fantastic shows planned for the Big Top that will be situated in the Town Park between August 4-19.”

Tickets for the Big Top shows can be purchased by calling the Box Office on 01952 382382 or online at www.telford50.co.uk/bigtop
