Finals of Young High Street Challenge competition

The finals of the Young High Street Challenge, which will be similar in format to the hit TV show Dragon’s Den, will take place at the Telford International Centre on Thursday.

Finals of Young High Street Challenge competition

The challenge to come up with ideas that would bring something new to the high streets in Wellington, Ironbridge, Oakengates, Dawley, Newport and Madeley was laid down by Telford & Wrekin Council in October 2017 as part of its Pride in Our Community High Street Fund initiative.  Young people were also challenged to come up a design idea that would improve the look and feel of Wellington Market.

Eight schools and around 200 students signed up to take part and they have spent the last six months researching ideas and working up business plans and designs.  During this time they have visited each of the locations as well as high streets in other regions for inspiration.

At the finals, students will be setting up stalls to showcase their ideas ready for the judges’ walkabout and questions.  They will then take to the stage to give a four-minute pitch in a last-ditch attempt to swing the judges’ favour.

Councillor Lee Carter, Telford & Wrekin Council cabinet member for finance, commercial services and economic development, said: “High streets are vital for bringing communities together. They’re the place where we meet friends and family, shop and enjoy ourselves.  We know there are challenges for high streets; these are well documented.  We also know that we need to work hard to come up with ideas and initiatives that will keep our high streets fresh and relevant for the generations to come.

“This is where the Young High Street Challenge comes in.  The challenge gives us the opportunity to tap into the brilliant minds of our young people to discover their ideas for what they think will make a positive difference.  I am really looking forward to hear what they have come up with.”

The finals of the Young High Street Challenge is at Telford International Centre on Thursday 21 June 2018, 10am to 4pm.  It is hosted by Telford & Wrekin Council, the University of Wolverhampton and National Enterprise Challenge.  The winning pitch will secure £20,000 to bring their idea to life in one of the six high streets. A further £10,000 will be awarded to the winning pitch to improve the look and feel of Wellington Market.  Individual prizes will also be given to the schools and young people taking part.
