New mayor and deputy mayor for Telford and Wrekin

Councillor Raj Mehta has been elected as the new mayor for Telford and Wrekin to represent the borough for 2018/19.

The new Mayor was elected at Telford & Wrekin Council’s annual meeting while Councillor Stephen Reynolds was elected as Deputy Mayor.

Councillor Mehta said: “It is a privilege to have been elected as Telford & Wrekin’s Mayor and I am delighted to be representing the borough in such an exciting year during Telford's 50th birthday celebrations.

“I am passionate about working with the local community, especially building relationships with our younger generations who are the future of Telford, and also our older generations who helped to make Telford the fantastic town it is today.”

Councillor Raj Mehta will be supported during his term in office by the Mayoress, his wife, Dr Poonam Mehta.

Raj became a borough councillor for Horsehay and Lightmoor ward, which includes Lawley, in 2016. He is also a member of Ketley Parish Council.

He has been working with the NHS for nearly two decades and runs a private surgery. He lives with his wife, Poonam who is also a local GP and their two children, Swatik & Rahul.

Raj has previous experience serving as a police constable for 10 years and is a school governor for Lawley Primary School.

During the meeting, Councillor Stephen Reynolds also presented Deputy Chief Executive and Director of Care Heather Palin from Severn Hospice with a cheque for £7,091 which has been raised during his year as mayor.

Councillor Stephen Reynolds will be deputy mayor for 2018/19. Stephen is councillor for the Oakengates & Ketley Bank Ward.

Stephen spent his working life as a customer relations officer for Severn Trent Water and has done voluntary work in retirement for Severn Hospice and the National Trust.

Stephen’s personal interests include collecting vintage vinyl records, local history, travelling the UK, visiting places of historical interest and working with local communities for the betterment of its residents and businesses.
