A look back at Pride improvements over the year
As this financial year comes to a close, Telford & Wrekin Council looks back at the Pride in Our Community maintenance and improvement projects undertaken in 2017/18.
In 12 months the Council has resurfaced 22 miles of roads, including an extensive surface dressing on the main streets of Ironbridge; improved 41.3 miles of footpaths; and upgraded around 10,000 street lights to more energy-efficient LEDs.
A number of major road reconstruction schemes to upgrade mainroutes into the borough were undertaken, including Holyhead Road between Junction 7 of the M54 and Haygate Road in Wellington.
Three problem underpasses in Brookside that were having issues with anti-social behaviour have been filled in. Improvements have been made to Oakengates and Dawley high streets and a new car park in Hadley centre (pictured) to increase parking spaces for shoppers and visitors to the nearby health centre has been created.
Many roads across the borough have had their markings refreshed and junctions improved. Road safety schemes have also been installed to make areas around schools safer.
Councillor Shaun Davies, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “It has been a busy 12 months and a lot of good work has been done through the Pride investment programme. The latest findings by the Department for Transport show that the condition of our roads are better than the regional and national averages, which is quite an achievement given the current financial challenges facing local authorities. Our approach is working.
“Later this month we will be announcing our 2018/19 work programme. During the year, we will continue to invest in maintaining and improving our roads, paths, street lights, high streets, parks and green spaces. As well as the planned work programme, our crews will be picking up responsive repairs including potholes, so we ask residents to continue to report any issues and concerns to us.”
