Telford 50 anniversary celebrations begin, bringing communities together

The Telford 50 celebrations began with a laser art installation that traversed the borough, connecting communities on its path across the borough – representing how the 50th anniversary connects people and places and reflecting Telford 50’s theme of light, symbolising celebration and the borough’s bright future.

Telford 50 anniversary celebrations begin, bringing communities together

On New Year’s Day and on 2 January, seven laser light beams shot over Telford and Wrekin, figuratively connecting the borough communities and kick-starting a year-long programme of events to celebrate Telford 50.

Thank you to everyone who has helped with the event at the laser origination points as well as to everyone who engaged with this event on social media and posted photos of the lasers using the hashtag #TF50light.

A full gallery of photos is available on the Telford 50 Facebook group and on the Council’s main Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts. We will be using these photos throughout the year in Telford 50 exhibitions and promotional activities as well as in our Destination Telford work.

Council Leader Shaun Davies said:  “The future has never looked brighter for Telford, we are going to have an exciting year to show what’s brilliant about Telford and our borough.

“We look forward to getting more and more people involved in the celebrations for Telford 50 throughout the year as there will be lots of community activities and projects that will leave a lasting legacy for Telford at 50. “

Telford’s 50th year will include festivals, carnivals, events and other festive activities that people can join in (the majority of them organised by our communities) as well as community projects to leave a lasting legacy.

Some of the headline events organised by the Council have already been announced and can be viewed here.

“Spring into the Park” celebrating St. Georges Day in suitable style with a number of nostalgic moments for Telfordians, “Kite and Flight” Festival with a host of hot air balloons, a bigger than ever Carnival of Giants that becomes a Carnival of Telford Giants involving many communities and schools - are among the highlights to mark the anniversary.

“The Place in the Park” event in August will see Oakengates Theatre move to the Town Park for a unique entertainment experience and stars like Boyzlife (Brian McFadden and Keith Duffy) , Russell Watson, Al Murray , Dara O’Briain and many more performing in a special dedicated Telford 50 event.
Look out for more programme announcements this month.
