One week to go to apply for bursary to promote educational, cultural and sporting excellence announced
There is just one week left to apply for Telford & Wrekin Council’s new Leader & Cabinet Members’ Young Person Bursary to promote educational, cultural and sporting excellence in the borough.
The bursary scheme aims to support and help children and young people living in Telford and Wrekin.
Last week it was revealed that the amount paid to councillors in the year 2016/17 is approximately £12,000 below what they were entitled as the Council’s cabinet took a voluntary ten per cent reduction in their special responsibilities allowance.
This reduction is being used to fund the bursary scheme, which is designed to assist children and young people who have been identified as gifted and talented in areas such as further education/training, sports, arts, culture, dance and music.
Applications opened last month for the new bursary scheme. The scheme is open to all children and young people up to the age of 25 who are resident in Telford and Wrekin and have been identified as gifted, talented, excellent or exceptional by their teacher, professional worker or mentor in either, education/training/employment, sport, arts, culture, dance or music.
The closing date for applications is next Monday (31 July 2017).
Councillor Shaun Davies, leader of Telford & Wrekin Council, said: “It’s great that we will be able to use this money that has been saved to help encourage and promote educational, cultural and sporting excellence in the borough.
“Talented and gifted local young people will be given the opportunity to really fulfil their ambitions with this fund.”
