The current theatre infrastructure, nearly 60 years old, requires substantial maintenance and upgrades to ensure its longevity. A recent public consultation has highlighted the community's enthusiasm for the project, emphasising the want and need for a theatre in the borough.

This project will welcome a comprehensive rebuild, remodel, and expansion of Telford Theatre, complete with a new modern entrance from the car park, a new auditorium and new studio theatre, community art room, additional toilets, and improved front and back of house areas, securing a contemporary theatre in Oakengates for the future.

Over half of those who took part in the survey also indicated that the plans would make them much more likely or more likely to visit the theatre and Oakengates in the future.

Councillor Carolyn Healy (Lab), Cabinet Member for Climate Action, Green Spaces, Heritage, and Leisure, said, "The remodelling of Telford Theatre marks a pivotal moment in our efforts to enhance cultural offerings and community spaces. This investment will ensure Telford Theatre remains a vibrant hub for generations to come."

Councillor Lee Carter (Lab), Telford& Wrekin Council Cabinet Member for Place (The Economy & Neighbourhood Services), added, "This project synergizes with the Telford Towns Fund Oakengates Theatre Quarter initiative, revitalising the 1960s precinct into a dynamic visitor destination. By attracting more visitors to Oakengates, we aim to stimulate daytime and evening economic activity, promote cultural engagement, and catalyse further investment to strengthen the visitor economy across the borough."

Theatre staff will remain in situ as the works begin in autumn/winter 2024.
