Community groups celebrate grants
Community groups across Telford and Wrekin have benefited from funding totalling £15,000 to help improve lives or the environment.
Sixteen groups have been awarded funding of up to £1,000 each. They were recognised at a special ceremony held yesterday (Thursday) at Belmont Community Hall, in Wellington, where they were able to showcase their projects.
Veolia has now given out more than £130,000 to different groups through EnviroGrant since the scheme started in 2014. In addition, each year Veolia supports a number of different projects across the borough as part of the company’s social added value work.
Among projects which received an EnviroGrant this year include a raised community garden, a sustainable travel school initiative and a wild art programme. Local community green spaces to benefit from funding include Hartshill Park, Horsehay Pool and Holmer Lake. Meanwhile, a sensory garden will be created in Wombridge, a soil improvement ash waste initiative is coming to Woodside and Apley Woods will see improvements for wildlife and visitors alike.
Councillor Lee Carter (Lab), Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member for Place (The Economy & Neighbourhood Services) said:
“I’d like to congratulate all the groups who have been awarded funding through the EnviroGrant scheme to bring their projects to life. Every one of them will help improve the quality of life for residents across our borough.
"The breadth of projects is just fantastic and I look forward to seeing how they make an impact. What’s wonderful is that they will encourage people to care for the natural environment, protect wildlife and do their bit in the fight against climate change.”
