Armed Forces personnel, veterans and families invited to Donnington drop-in session

Telford & Wrekin Council, in partnership with Telford MIND and Donnington & Muxton Parish Council, are holding an Armed Forces Community drop-in session at Turreff Hall in Donnington next week, for serving members of the Armed Forces, Reservists, veterans and their families.

Hosted by the councils, the session provides the opportunity to access advice and support on a range of issues, and a chance to socialise with like-minded people. There will also be information about the range of activities across the borough for armed forces personnel, veterans and their families, including from Wrekin Housing Group, Telford Aftercare Team, Telford & Wrekin CVS, and other agencies, and details about Veterans Cafes, the Model for Heroes group, Veterans’ Breakfast Clubs, Veterans’ Football Club and regular ‘tab and talk’ sessions.

The drop in session is from 4pm to 6pm on Wednesday 17 January, at Turreff Hall, Donnington TF2 8HG and is open to all serving personnel, families and veterans.

Councillor Raj Mehta, Telford & Wrekin Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for the Armed Forces Covenant, said: “With an estimated armed forces community of around 20,000 people in our borough, it is one of our council priorities to protect and support their health and wellbeing. Through the Armed Forces Covenant, Telford & Wrekin Council has made a strong commitment to support serving personnel, veterans and their families and, along with local partners, we offer a wide range of activities, information and support.

“This drop-in session is the first one we’ve held in Donnington, and we’ll be taking the opportunity to talk to people about a new Veterans’ Café that we’ll be launching in the area soon, to find out what they’d like to see included, and what times of day would work best for them.

Notes

The Armed Forces Covenant is a pledge, taken by public and private sector organisations, that together they acknowledge and understand that those who serve or who have served in the armed forces, and their families, should be treated with fairness and respect in the communities, economy and society that they serve with their lives.

Telford & Wrekin Council first signed the Armed Forces Covenant in 2012, reaffirming its commitment in May 2020, and has since ensured that there is a strong infrastructure in place to meet the commitments of the covenant.

To date, 126 organisations, across Telford and Wrekin have signed up to the covenant. More than third of these signatories have taken place in the last 12 months. Of the 27 Town & Parish Councils within the Borough, a total of 26 have also signed the covenant.
