Extra A442 spring clean starts today

Telford and Wrekin Council have arranged for litter picking to take place on the A442 Eastern Primary today (Monday, February 20) as a result of build up along the route.

Extra A442 spring clean starts today

Lane closures will be needed for the week-long operation in order to protect contractor Idverde’s crews while working alongside the dual carriageway.

Deputy Leader Councillor Richard Overton, Telford & Wrekin Council’s cabinet member for housing, enforcement, and transport, said: “The A442 is the main highway through Telford and keeping it clean is an important part of maintaining pride in our borough.

“The work over the next five days will remove litter which has accidentally blown here but a large proportion which has been thrown directly from vehicle windows. Everything from coffee cups to cigarette ends, dirty nappies to old newspapers.

“Keeping the country’s streets clean cost local councils collectively almost £700 million last year. Much of this is avoidable litter and money that could be better spent in the community.”

Littering remains a criminal offence under the Environmental Protection Act 1990 and Telford & Wrekin Council’s environmental enforcement officers continue to enforce this legislation across the borough.

Officers can issue a fine of £150 to registered keepers of vehicles if litter is thrown from their vehicle. This is the case even if they were not in the vehicle or did not throw the litter.

If you have witnessed a driver throwing litter from their vehicle and if it is safe to do so, please note the driver registration plate, vehicle make/model and if possible a description of the driver and email recyclefortelford@telford.gov.uk

The clean-up is an additional one that has been deemed necessary due to the volume of litter that has accumulated since the last clean up at the end of 2022.

To report littering from a vehicle, please email the team at recyclefortelford@telford.gov.uk with the make and model of the vehicle along with a brief description of the driver and registration number. You can also leave a message on the confidential 01952 388 800.
